FOREST AND CASTLES
This is a great tour for lovers of both nature and history.
• Experience walking through the tropical rainforest of Kakum National Park, then see the world from a different angle up on the Canopy Walkway.
• Visit and castles of Elmina and Cape Coast and witness part of the history of the North Atlantic Slave Trade.
• Lunch in Cape Coast in a local restaurant and depending on conditions dip your toes in the warm water of the Atlantic Ocean or walk around the centre of Cape Coast.
Our Forest and Castles tour leaves Accra bright and early to allow us a full day exploring the famous sites of the Central Region of Ghana.
We head west out of Accra for our first stop - Kakum National Park, one of West Africa’s surviving tropical rain forests, which extends over 375sq km and is home to many species of flora and fauna. There is a short uphill walk through the forest escorted by a park guide to the first of seven rope-bridges that make up the canopy walkway. Then experience the thrill of walking on the bridges among the treetops 30m (100 feet) above the forest floor.
We leave the forest and head to visit the capital of Ghana’s Central Region, Cape Coast and its infamous castle and slave dungeons. Cape Coast Castle houses the West African Historical Museum. You’ll be guided through the castle and learn some of the history of the Atlantic slave trade.
There are a number of options for lunch in Cape Coast and you can discuss your preferences with your driver. For example, Oasis Beach Resort offers delicious home-made pizzas, as well as local Ghanaian dishes. Oasis is right on the beach and you’ll have the chance to enjoy the ocean breeze and dip your toes in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, if conditions permit. Otherwise you can walk through the bustling streets of Cape Coast and visit its fishing harbour. After lunch we drive along the coast to the fishing port of Elmina for our final stop of the day to visit Elmina Castle and its notorious prisons. After a guided tour of the castle, we head back to Accra.
